Wood paneling went out of common style quite some time ago. Except of course in that monstrous wood library in the mansion you have to buy tickets to go tour! Homes of the 1960's and 70's seemed to sport walls made of faux paneling and manufactured homes still tend to have this wall treatment. Finding someone today that loves wall paneling is highly unusual. Most of us are wanting to get rid of it. But how? Here's your answer: Wash your wall until it's squeaky clean to remove any dirt and oils. Fill the lines in your paneling with joint compound (yes, I know, I'm the queen of joint compound and a freak about it ever since the day I discovered all the things I could do with the stuff!). Simply smooth the joint compound in to the panel lines and let dry over night. You will find that the compound will shrink as it dries so apply a second fill in to the lines and let dry. Continue this process until the lines are now level with the rest of the paneling. Wipe away any excess compound with a damp sponge each time. Use fine sandpaper to sand the lines smooth then give the entire wall two coats of primer and then paint your favorite color, do a faux finish or add stenciling to embelish. The paneling lines will be gone forever and you will have a beautiful smooth wall! |
