Decorating with Plaster Stencils

Out of the past and in to today's beautiful home!

When Pat Carlin sent me these photos originally, they were a bit dark, somewhat grainy and I could barely make out what it was she was so excited about.

So off I went to my trusty photo editing program and I began to lighten, to sharpen the contrast, to smooth the grain... and as I did.. goose bumps began to well up on my arms and face as in to my view, emerged the most beautiful and elegant Victorian ceiling! There it had been all along, hidden in the shadows of the photos.

As the photos clarified, and I began to see what she was elated about, I felt as if I were first discovering some treasure... hidden away in someone's wonderful imagination.. but it wasn't imagined at all... it was REAL and Pat did it all by her lonesome!

Spending hours hanging from a ladder, and at times I'm sure, even "dangling" from that ladder, Pat used our Raised Plaster Worthington Border Stencil to surround the beautiful chandelier , the edge of the ceiling and to border the walls.

She then used our Raised Plaster Worthington Tile Stencil to create the line of unique square tiles.

Pat purchased this Victorian home fully intending to re-invent it's dilapidated self and return it to it's former glory. She calls it a "Labor of Love".

"Labor of Love"... that's how I have felt about every home I've lived in.

We sometimes view our houses as transitional, and when it comes to fixing, cleaning, making it more beautiful, I've sometimes heard people say (when they refused to do anything for it); "Well, I will probably just sell it anyway".

But that's not how I feel. The homes we live in are so much more than that. We are part of their history and they are part of ours. They get included in photos that are handed down through the generations..... They are part of us and we, a part of them... for their lifetimes.

They are just boxy rooms with poor carpeting and moldy basements. They are where we live, dream, work, relax, play. They are where we formed memories, raised our children and fought our battles to make life better. They deserve more from us.

When I think of my home, I know I've added to it's beauty and it's history. For it was "I" that added that gorgeous cast plaster medallion back in 2005, it was "I" that planted the garden in 1999, it's was "I" that helped my husband build a 6 foot stone wall in our front courtyard that will last for decades to come. I've contributed to the beauty and the history of this wonderful home.

My "Labor of Love".

Thank you Pat, for sharing yours!
