A Single Mold Creates an Elegant Medallion

Eddie McMillan shows us that just one single mold can create a full ceiling medallion by simply repeating the design in a circle.

To create this lovely work of art, Eddie used our

Over The Door Shell Arch Mold to cast 4 pieces then applied them on all 4 sides of his light fixture.

It's super easy to do. Simply coat the inside of the mold with an oil product such as spray release or even a brushing of mineral oil will do the trick.

Mix Plaster Of Paris with water to the consistency of pancake batter, pour in the mold then wait for it to harden.

Pop out the hardened piece and cast another until you have the desired number of pieces.

Once the pieces are dry (you can bake them in your home oven on 300 degrees for 1 hour and they will be dry as a bone!), spread a layer of joint compound over the entire back side of the piece (about 1/4" thick) and hold to the ceiling for 1 minute.

Wipe any excess from around the edges and fill in any gaps between the piece and the ceiling with additional joint compound, smoothing as you go.

Once the joint compound is dry, paint your new medallion the color of your ceiling or try something more dramatic by painting it gold! Whew! Now THAT would be elegant!

For additional color contrast, paint the inside ceiling area of the medallion a different color than your ceiling is already painted (pale blue for instance?).

The same design can also be used to create a scalloping border around the room for even more drama.

The molds are made of a very flexible plastic that will last through many, many castings so use it to create many different types of projects (a faux headboard maybe?).
