Decorating with Window Treatments

An Italian Drape with a success story behind it.

Lynn Low, my younger sister and aspiring artist, is one of my favorite success stories.

Lynn always swore she didn't have a talented bone in her body. But turning 40 does something to we women..... the kids are grown and don't need baby care anymore and we find ourselves with spare time we didn't used to have.... time to play, experiment and chase our own dreams.

At 40, Lynn broke out of the "Mommy" mold and headed to where her interests have developed over the years. Decorating.....

After just two years, little training and much encouragement from her friends and family, Lynn began decorative painting. Soon discovered by one of the top faux artists in New Mexico, Lynn is now hired regularly to use her creative talents in the homes and businesses of the wealthy.

In her own kitchen re-do, an Italian themed room of warmth and color, Lynn experimented with draped material and rods and came up with this wonderful treatment that brings the room together with elegance and style.

Notice that there are two pieces of material. One light in the back and one darker in the front.

The first piece is attached to the wall using a simple rubber band about 6" above the top of the window, drapes down over the drape rod and hangs straight down the sides of the window. Easy enough... right? Also, notice that the lighter drape is rather shimmery (a lightweight faux satin) and the darker drape has no shine to it, creating a visual contrast that is just beautiful.

The second drape (the darker material) simply drapes straight across the brackets, tugged just a tich in the center to create a "swag" effect and hangs on the "outside" of the lighter material and window edges.

She chose colors in the same hues as her Italian faux finished walls, accessorizing in deep browns to off-set the main color and coordinate with the mounted curtain brackets.

GREAT job Lynn! I fell in love with it the moment I saw it.
