An Accent Wall Becomes a Stone Masterpiece

Turning the Corner

Before

Sue Thompson saw a vision in her head when she decided her accent wall needed some drama. That vision was dressed in luscious stone.

As we all know, adding real stone walls to your home is very expensive and even if you do it yourself, you are now also stuck with the mess. So Sue decided to do it herself the easy, inexpensive way by choosing our Raised Plaster Stacked Stone Stencil to turn that thin wall in to a dramatically beautiful wall that compliments the rest of her home.

Sue dealt with the corner by flipping the stencil to it's reverse side and plastering matching stones on the adjacent wall then filling the area on the corner with joint compound.

She then colored her stones with paint to make them look totally real.

What a great job Sue and I look forward to working on the Better Homes and Garden article with you!

Designer's Tips:

To create your own dramatic stone wall, simply tape the stencil in an upper corner of the wall, smear liberally with joint compound, remove the stencil and allow to dry.

Since you cannot place a repeat next to wet joint compound, you can speed the process by measuring over one width of the stencil and stencil the 3rd repeat instead. Jumping a repeat this way, allows you to continue to work steadily.

Once the compound has dried, you can now go back and do your fill in repeats.

Pre-painting the wall the color you wish your grout to be is another trick that the pros use all the time to save hours and hours of valuable time.

To color your stones quickly, I like stirring in 2-3 rich colors (such as black, rust and brown) in to my joint compound to create a "swirl" of the colors. Don't mix them in to the compound or even try to blend them any more than simply swirling them gently together..

As you smear this colored mixture over the stone stencil, you find that the colors blend naturally and create very dramatic differences in the colors of each stone, making them look totally real!
