Decorating with Faux Finishes

An Old Lamp Gets New Life

Perusing the thrift store one afternoon, I spotted this really unique lamp. It wasn't like any other lamp I had ever seen so I purchased it for a mere $10.00

Curious about it's styling, I did a bit of investigation on the internet for Victorian lamp styles and found that its styling was similar to some found in the early 1900's.

The lamp is electric, yet it has attached candle holders which really caught my eye.

It's finish however was rusted and flaking off.

I gave it a white vinegar bath then used a metal brush to remove the rust and primed it with metal primer.

I then gave it two coats of brilliant gold faux finish paint.

Once that was dry, I did a wash over the ornate metal with diluted black paint and water which settled in to the recesses of the design and really showed off it's ornamental beauty.

Two coats of high gloss spray sealer, a new lamp shade (in a feminine style) and I had a fabulous new lamp for my dressing room!
